Midterm Exam (March 10)
The midterm exam will be in four parts.

Part I. (20 points)
This is a matching test of vocabulary. You will need to be able to recognize definitions of each of the following concepts:


For an explanation of each concept, click on a term and a link will open. The best way to learn this information is to use 3"x5" index cards, writing the concept on one side of the card and the definition and example on the other side.

Part II (25 points)
This part consists of a set of five true-false statements based on general principles that have been taught so far in this course.

Part III (25 points)
This part consists of a set of five Multiple Choice statements related to checklist ethnicity, language, countertransference, cultural competence, and the influence of culture on knowledge of traditional sources of help and the recognition of a problem.

Part IV. (30 points)
The exam ends with two essay questions (15 points each): 

1. Describe at least three measures that Goldstein and Noguera indicate are needed in a culturally competent program for helping Latino youth to stay away from drugs. Explain why you think that each of these measures is effective.

2. List examples from Mary Crow Dog's article that show the cultural incompetence of the people who ran the Indian schools. Then redesign Mary's school in a way that would show cultural competence. Please make your design specific and detailed.

You may bring these two articles to class with you on the day of the exam in order to refer to them as you are writing the essays.
