LABELING THEORY

The view of deviance is as a matter of definition, developed through a process of human interaction

Example: Every society creates categories of deviant behavior by virtue of setting up norms. People whose way of living is in violation of those norms will be labeled deviant. While some societies may allow a man to have more than one wife, United States law would define that man as a criminal.
