Rewards or punishments for behavior associated with a particular norm.

Example:
People who talk out loud during a movie are likely to be “shushed” by others who want to watch the movie, and, if they do not stop, may be thrown out by the management. People who are quiet are allowed to remain in the theatre without being the target of negative reactions from others.
