SEX AND GENDER

SEX
A biological category into which each person is born and that is determined by chromosomes (XY chromosomes for men and XX chromosomes for women). It determines whether one is male or female.

Example: Visible physical characteristics usually determine whether one is male or female.

GENDER
A socio-cultural category that reflects different expectations and different advantages for men and women

Examples: Men are expected to be more skilled than women in science, mathematics, and management, and women are expected to be more skilled in care giving.  Jobs related to science, mathematics, and management are paid more than those related to care giving (such as nursing, human services, and child care).
