SEX AND GENDER
SEX
A biological category into which each person is born and that is determined by
chromosomes (XY chromosomes for men and XX chromosomes for women)
Example: Visible physical characteristics usually determine whether one is male or female.
GENDER
A socio-cultural category that reflects different expectations and different
advantages for men and women
Examples:
Men are expected to be more skilled than women in science, mathematics, and
management, and women are expected to be more skilled in care giving. Jobs
related to science, mathematics, and management are paid more than those related
to care giving (such as nursing, human services, and child care).
