  1. The main ideas in Chapter 5 and in the article by Ehrenreich and Piven, "Without a Safety Net"

    What you will need to know from these readings:
    a. why people are poor
    b. why we might question the present income structure
    c. the main insight that Marx contributed to our understanding of social class
    d. why, according to Ehrenreich and Piven, former welfare recipients lost their jobs
    e. what Ehrenreich and Piven show about the consequences of welfare reform
