DEINDUSTRIALIZATION

The departure of capital and industrial jobs from communities where they traditionally been located.

Example: The northeast region of the United States used to have a large number of factories, where people could get good-paying jobs without a college education. Those jobs have now gone to poorer countries, leaving low-paying jobs in the service sector for low-income Americans (the working poor).
