A sociological school of thought characterized by an emphasis on order, consensus and harmony – concerned with how societies work, how they encourage conformity and prevent abrupt changes

Example: The functional view of stratification is that it is necessary in order to ensure the division of labor. Wealth, power, and prestige are incentives to make sure that the most qualified people get into the most important positions.
