MEDIAN INCOME

A figure that indicates the midpoint of income distribution, with 50 percent of the population above that point and 50 percent below.

Example: statistics given by the Census Bureau or the Bureau of Labor Statistics use the median income because it gives a more accurate picture than the average income (which can be thrown off by a few extremely high earners).
