SO 355 - Study Guide for Week of September 8

For this week you need to know the following concepts:

For a definition and example, click on a concept and a link will open. The best way to learn this information is to use 3"x5" index cards, writing the concept on one side of the card and the definition and example on the other side.

The following questions will guide your reading for this week and will serve as a basis for class discussion. Please prepare an answer to the question that corresponds with your assigned number in your small group. You may also use one or more of these questions as a starting point for your first or second essay.
1. What problems do Eitzen and Zinn (in Chapter 1) see as resulting from globalization?
How does globalization affect your own life, or how it is likely to affect it in the future?
2. With reference to the article by Giddens, what are some good things about globalization? What does Giddens see as some of the problems caused by it?
3. Why do Brecher, Costello, and Smith claim that the past quarter-century of globalization has resulted in an increase in poverty and inequality? How has the average American family been affected?
4. After reading the first four pages of the booklet by Barker and Mander, explain in your own words what free trade is and what its goals are. Do you think that the idea that the “rising tide will lift all boats” applies to Mollie and Balbina? Why or why not?
5. According to Barker and Mander, why should people who care about jobs, human rights, healthy, safety, the environment, or social justice be concerned about the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body? Do you agree or disagree with their position? Explain why, with reference to a specific example.
6. After reading Eitzen’s list of “Dimensions of Globalization,” state which ones are of personal interest to you and explain why.
